As common as it is to hear people mention how they are seeking their life purpose, it isn’t as common for them to have found or be actively living out their life purpose (according to them). Since I can remember, the term, life purpose, has been a popular goal in peoples lives, more so now that I am a seasoned Life coach and counselor in my clinic.
Having the experience and opportunity of working with several clients throughout the years of my practice, I have discovered different perspectives of those who have defined life purpose within their own parameters.
Some people define it as living life with purpose! If they “find” this said purpose, they focus on a purposeful way of living. I like this definition because it takes away the feeling of the void some people experience during a time of unknowing, but what does it really mean to live with “purpose”? This would limit some people from experiencing living life with purpose, if they do not get a grasp on the philosophy of a purposeful life.
Other people feel it means to follow a career with their “God-given” gifts. I also like this interpretation because many people are suffering from doubts that they are lacking in natural gifts. However, I have met many people with beautiful natural gifts and do not pursue a potential purposeful life with their attributes or they do not consider that their gift can be an abundant opportunity. In this case, as people are diverse, there will be a variety of paths from a single belief.
Some people create their life purpose relative to their passions, others seek out the signs of the universe; synchronicities which lead them to their “path”. These are just a few of the most common interpretations that I have encountered from the people around me but there are many other personal definitions.
What is LIFE PURPOSE?
It is in my understanding that the journey to discovering (directly or indirectly) your life purpose, is the purpose itself. Too many people are in a rush to achieve this ULTIMATE GOAL in life. I have seen people pressure themselves and stress themselves unnecessarily trying to uncover their life purpose, to finally actualize their dreams and goals. Sometimes, people don’t know what they want out of life, let alone a purposeful direction (career, life, relationships). It is a serious predicament to find yourself feeling confused or purposeless.
There is a misconception that “achieving” a life purpose will complete you. That suddenly you will know all the answers and life will be easier if you have a purpose. The association of purpose and feeling complete; whole, is what distracts you from clearly seeing that your life, regardless of the state or stage you are in, is a purpose! The result of believing in the illusion that life purpose must be grand and positive, leaves you feeling insecure of yourself because of the unrealistic expectations you may have about yourself or the world. It usually leads to a victim mentality, thus creating the illusion of stagnation.
THE JOURNEY IS PRESENT
I would like to help some of you understand the beauty of patience and purpose, as they go hand in hand. When you have total patience, you are more likely to live out your life purpose sooner than later. The significance of this is, once you acknowledge the power of the NOW, the present moment, you are in self awareness. You become aware of the journey instead of focused on the end-result. You gain clarity in the state of patience, you are more able to tap into your intuition and follow the path without fear or doubt. It is within that awareness, that you acknowledge the path you are experiencing IS the purpose of your life. Accepting that seeking a life purpose is an illusion will change how you live and perceive life, because you are no longer obsessing or seeking the desire to achieve a life purpose before a certain time. You cannot seek that which is a part of you. We are all living our soul’s purpose. This very moment is everything!
Every layer of your life is giving you insight to live purposefully, think about it, every challenge, obstacle, circumstance, predicament, drama and so on is teaching you a valuable lesson. Each layer of experience is guiding you to be wiser and wiser. That is purpose! Now, how you choose to look at your predicament is the direction in which your purpose manifests.
When you live day by day without judging yourself or judging the experience as negative then a miracle occurs. You take every opportunity of experience and put value to it and purpose to your life. You start to believe in the beauty within the darkness; blessings in disguise, if you will. This helps you to believe in your purpose, to live life knowing you can trust in yourself and the universe.
The same applies to the positive aspects that life can give you. Abundance, milestones, creation, love, joy and so on, can teach you so much about yourself. There is purpose in experiencing the beauty of life, IF you are in a state of total gratitude, in the moment you are receiving the blessings.
APPLYING YOURSELF IN LIVING A PURPOSEFUL LIFE, MOMENT TO MOMENT
MEDITATION is a wonderful method to guide you into living moment to moment with purpose and intention. You will learn patience and the SELF. Ultimately, knowing and mastering the Self is the goal! With each breath you take into this world of self-awareness, you become more inclined to just BEING. Nothing else matters except for right now.
SHADOW WORK can help you discover fragments of yourself that target the mental/emotional blocks and imbalances that cause you to either obsess or seek out an ultimate “life purpose”. Shadow Work will reveal your blind spots. (Unconscious data). I highly recommend Shadow Work if you are feeling stagnant, blocked, depressed about your life, or in victim mentality (feeling like there’s nothing for you in life). This work will initiate the way to self love, which is an important aspect to a purposeful life.
ARE YOU READY TO LIVE YOUR PURPOSE RIGHT NOW?
It is not easy taking on this challenge, to commit to yourself and finding security in living moment to moment. The uncertainty of tomorrow makes people insecure but if you focus on today, you will get things done. Whatever it is that helps you to be secure in your future starts right at this very moment!
This is not relevant to setting up goals and planning your future, this is about building your future right now! Taking small steps into the direction of a healthy happy future with the knowledge and practice of living your purpose NOW! Be patient and take in what life is trying to show you, there is purpose in every experience, when you learn to observe with your soul. Learn to be compassionate with yourself and be in love with the journey, with all the lessons life has to offer you.
In general, everyone will have their own perspective of what life purpose is to them. There is also purpose in not caring for a purpose, or desperately seeking a purpose, it doesn’t really matter unless you are conscious about working towards living a life with purpose. Obviously, anyone reading this is interested and/or conscious of life-purpose and therefore, will consider the work needed to achieve a healthy perspective in applying their life purpose. I also want to add that if you believe that your natural gifts and talents are your life purpose and you are applying it into your career and life, then good for you! I think it is amazing to utilize your gifts as a career! There are people who do not associate life purpose with career, and I want to point out that a lot of people are not passionate about their gifts, therefore, choose not to pursue it as a life purpose, and that is okay too! It is an interesting topic for discussion.
I, myself, have an amazing story about how I came into my practice or what some would call “life-purpose”. My passions are Psychology, Anthropology and Archaeology and once upon a time it was my dream to pursue it, but instead I am sharing my intuitive gifts and I allowed space for that purpose. In saying so, we limit ourselves with the illusion of what our life purpose should be, when we can do so many things in a life time. I will share my account of how I came to this point in my life in my next blog. Ultimately, life purpose has no beginning and no end, so reflect on your journey and be proud you made it this far. There is much more to go and lets face it, our purpose goes beyond this reality.
Accept the growth, change and evolution!
